A diagnosis of fibromyalgia (FM) can be one of the most frustrating to hear. It is often the last label given to peoples’ chronic pain by doctors who have tried everything else without success. Like the drawer in your house that collects all of the odds and ends that you don’t know what to do with, doctors often fall back on this diagnosis because they don’t know what else to do with their pain patients. No other answer seems to fit.
Most people with FM learn to live with their pain. Medication rarely offers relief, and there are few alternatives available.
There is now a strong link between FM and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), another “junk drawer” diagnosis that doctors give when nothing else seems to fit. People who suffer with one often suffer with both syndromes, as well as an alarmingly high rate of irritable bowel syndrome, TMJ dysfunction, and migraines.
Researchers have found a link between neck trauma, such as even minor whiplash injuries, and FM and CFS. It has been found that nearly 1 in 4 people who suffer whiplash develop FM. FM is also 13 times more likely following a neck injury than any other kind of injury.
Research by Dr Marshall Dickholtz on FM and CFS patients who undergo upper cervical chiropractic care found the following in his test patients:
• Physical Functioning increased from 58% to 85%
• General Health improved from 35% to 55%
• Vitality improved from 17% to 55%
• Social Functioning increased from 40% to 70%
• Mental Health improved from 50% to 70%
Patients under upper cervical chiropractic care have a great probability of seeing success, because unlike conventional therapies attempting to treat the symptoms of pain, upper cervical care finds the cause and eliminates it.
